Game Proposal: Trial

For the final game, Hatim and I want to explore the concept of disruption as much as we can. Our game will be a hybrid of digital and analog, and we will attempt to incorporate a nice dynamic where players are able to seamlessly navigate the game space while having to interact with the physical space around them as well.

The format of the game will be as follows – the player starts off by being placed in a dungeon like space. The goal would be to get to certain location where the player would find treasure/be able to escape into the open. Along the way the player would face obstacles and challenges that may hinder their path. In the physical world, we hope to place a book next to the laptop. Inside this book we would have written different cheat codes or ways to get the cheat codes. Entering a cheat code would modify some aspect of the game play.

An example here might help to see what we would be going for: The player is navigating a dungeon and realises they have to reach a podium at a certain height. Inside the book, there could be a cheat code that would give the user the ability to jump very high. This cheat code may not directly be written in the book – it may be hidden somewhere in the presentation space and only directions to the cheat code would be written in the book. Using this cheat code in the game would allow the user to unlock the ability of jumping high, which would help them reach that podium.

There will be cheat codes that modify player behaviour and some might be there just to modify appearance or add some silly effect (Make the player pink, for example). At the end of the game, when the player reaches the doorway they are supposed to, they are judged – they lose the game if they have cheated too much and they get the treasure if they have cheated below the threshold that we set.
